Hi.

Happy Sunday, everyone. This week I had the pleasure of interviewing BJ Lackland about his experience in the RBF and alternative financing space. As you know, BJ led Lighter Capital from having a dozen or so deals to more than 350, so he knows the space, and its pitfalls, well. BJ covered several key areas with us during our interview...from how RBF fits into the alternative capital space to how he sees the industry evolving from here, and everything in between. This was a conversation full of information and insight (I’ve received a couple of notes of thanks about this one already from experienced investors who let me know BJ taught them a lot in the hour we spent together).

Industry Standards

The conversation with BJ further highlighted that while we as an industry are still fragmented, the level of connection between us has definitely improved. I hear from you all pretty consistently that we need standards - standard language, standard terms and docs, etc. I agree. To that end, and to help move that forward, we’ll start surveying this community in 2021 about what key standards make the most sense, and how we can get there. To jump start us, our friends David Teten and Jamie Finney would like your help. See below for an opportunity to weigh in on naming our asset class and what we collectively do.

We shared some time ago a 5-part series in Techcrunch on revenue-based investing, by David Teten, Founder, Versatile VC.

Jamie Finney of greatercolorado.vc and David are publishing a followup study, focused on VCs (like indie.VC) which are in between revenue-based VC and traditional equity VC.  They’d like to understand everyone’s preferred terminology for this new asset class that we’re collectively pioneering. Revenue-based financing? Revenue-share? Royalty-share?

Would you please take 2 minute to provide your input in THIS SURVEY.  We’ll share the results with the group.  Thanks!

Also, David Teten maintains an overview of all the RBI VCs here: Who are the major Revenue-Based Investing VCs?  If you’d like to update or add yourself, David is glad to hear from you.  Just mail dteten@versatilevc.com with a 1-2 paragraph profile of yourself, with whatever metrics you'd like to share publicly.

WANT TO HEAR FROM A PARTICULAR INVESTOR?

We’re working now to schedule our Speaker Series interviews for 2021, so watch for that schedule coming later this month. If you have ideas on who you’d like to hear from, email us at info@rbfnetwork.org and we’ll get your ideas onto our list!
